Program Summary and Itinerary:
Spend 5 days (5 nights) exploring interior Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula with unforgettable scenery, abundant wildlife and a number of disturbance events in the natural landscape. The trip will start early (6 AM) Sunday morning (3 June) and drive 2.5 hours south to Denali National Park. While at the park we will be looking at disturbance issues related to human dynamics in a park setting. We will also be traveling into the park so the potential for significant wildlife viewing and panoramic views of Mt. McKinley will be possible. The first evening will be spent at the McKinley Creekside cabins approximately 20 minutes south of the park entrance. Box lunches will be provided and dinner will be available at a cafe close to the cabins. The following day (Monday) we will be traveling to the Kenai Peninsula making a number of stops related to insect, disease, and human related disturbances that are present south of the Alaska Range. The following three days will be spent in the Kenai Peninsula observing a wide range of forest health problems. A number of these problems can be tied to the climate change dynamics that are currently taking place within the state. We will spend 2 nights in the Soldotna area touring the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge with an Ecologist of the US Fish & Wildlife Service and 2 nights in Homer to view the epicenter of the spruce bark beetle outbreak, as well as some tourism impacts. On the last day (Friday 8 June) we will be returning to Anchorage. If anyone is interested in a half day fishing trip while in Homer, we can help you arrange that and it will cost extra. You can also choose to stay in Homer and make your own way back to Anchorage. At that time if you want to stay in Anchorage we can drop you off at your hotel or if you are planning to leave the state we can drop you off at the airport. |
Program Cost Will Include the Following:
Meals are not include in the price unless specified (Most lunches are included in the cost). The price does include hotel reservations for all nights on the tour (5 nights). You are responsible for hotel cost upon return to Anchorage. We will be able to drop you off at the airport if you are returning home during the evening of the 8 June. |
Important When Making Flight Reservation:
One critical item if you are planning on going on the field trip is the need to make special airline travel arrangements. You will need to book a flight that arrives in Fairbanks and then returns out of Anchorage. You may want to make your travel reservations a little later than completing your registration documents so we can verity that the minimum number of people has registered for the tour. We will let you know as soon as that has happened. You should not reserve a return flight before 7 PM on 8 June. |
